"Life will never be the same." As if New Yorkers didn't have enough to worry about. Now we have to think about which way to run if a bomb goes off in the workplace; is the front or the back of the train more likely be the choice of an attack; how to get to Brooklyn if the bridges are down. But, as we all know, life keeps rolling on while orange increasingly becomes a vaguely ominous color.
Songs in the Key of Orange Alert is Audio Fiction's debut EP album. It reflects the tenacity of life and the desire to hold onto the things that always were, even when everything is supposed to be different.
The record's title is inspired by the New York "terror alert" status under which the songs were written. In an odd twist, the day the band announced the name of the upcoming CD release, Tom Ridge, the Homeland Security czar, raised the terror alert status to Orange, giving the band quite a bit of press coverage.
While no other track on the EP is as overtly political as the anti-war anthem "Tick Tock," each song deals in one way or another with the anxiety endemic to our place and time. Whether it be in context of romantic relationships ("Bless Me," "Impenetrable," "Wanna Be Wild"), unemployment ("Don't Do It"), or all-purpose existential angst with a New York time-crunch twist ("Race the Hourglass"), all the tracks have an underlying uncertainty in common. This, coupled with Audio Fiction's sardonic wit and tongue-in-cheek humor, make for an EP that is unique, compelling, entertaining and danceable.
"Tick Tock" will be the first single released from the CD. To the band's surprise and amusement, the song has already been embraced by Democrats and Liberals alike in questioning the current administration policies on Iraq. While the song has a serious subject matter, it is played as a catchy pop/rock song with a healthy dose of irony and catchy riffs. In fact, many first time listeners had no idea of what or who it was about, leading the band to wonder we guessed that everyone must know a least one American psycho.
